Side Ancient City

A seaside peninsula with a theatre and a temple of Apollo at the water's edge

About Side Ancient City

Side occupies a small peninsula about 70 kilometres east of Antalya. Founded in antiquity, it became a busy trading port, and today ruins sit right in the town: a large Roman theatre, an agora, a monumental gate, and the Temple of Apollo and Athena on the waterfront, whose reconstructed columns are among the most photographed sights on the Turkish coast.

The old town has narrow lanes with shops and restaurants, and there are long sandy beaches on both sides of the peninsula. Side combines easily with Manavgat waterfall, and with Aspendos for a day trip.

Practical notes

  • Reach Side by dolmuş (minibus) from Antalya's bus station, by taxi or on a tour.
  • Visit the temple area at sunset.
  • The town is busiest in high summer; spring and autumn are calmer.
  • Check opening hours and ticket details for the theatre and museum before you go.
