Olympos and the Chimaera Flames

Lycian ruins in a forested valley and flames that burn on the mountainside

About Olympos and the Chimaera Flames

South-west of Antalya, on the Lycian coast, Olympos is an ancient Lycian city spread through a forested valley that runs down to a long pebble beach. Ruins of temples, tombs, houses and a theatre are scattered among the trees, with a stream running through the site.

Nearby, the Chimaera (Yanartaş) is a group of small flames that burn from vents in the rocky hillside, fed by natural gas. They have been burning for thousands of years and were known to ancient writers. The best time to visit is after dark, when the flames are most visible, via a short, steep path from the car park.

Practical notes

  • Olympos is about 80 kilometres from Antalya; allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Many travellers choose a day tour or stay overnight in the Olympos/Çıralı area.
  • The Chimaera hike is short but steep and rocky; bring a torch and sturdy shoes.
  • The Lycian Way long-distance trail passes through here, so you can also walk a stretch.
  • Entry fees and opening conditions for the ruins and Chimaera can change; check before you go.
